Election Candidates and Statements

Class Presidents:
.
a) Samir Bidnur and Brandon Sheffield
Vote Sam and Brandon. We’re serious, we think this might work out. We’re good people and will try our best. If you have a better blurb, let us know. This is how involved we want you all to be in our presidency.
.
b) Melissa Loh and Devon Turner
We, Melissa and Devon, would like you to consider us as your class presidents for next year. We see our role mainly as facilitating communication between our class, medsoc and the deans. Our goals would be to maintain a functioning class council, staying focused on major areas of concern. Some of the main issues we can foresee arising are the transition into Credit/No Credit, the CaRMS process, maintenance of class cohesiveness, and major issues that come up as the year progresses into unforeseen territories. We both have experience working in leadership roles, working on class council and with faculty. We’ve also had successful experiences working together in the past, most significantly with our involvement in Orientation Week. We put a lot of thought into this decision and we are realistic that class next year will place unknown academic demands on our schedules. However, we do make a commitment to fulfilling our obligations as class presidents. On that note, we believe we will do a great job as your class council presidents, so please come out and vote in Monday’s election.
.
Social Reps:
.
a) Rob Ciccarelli and Cameron Starratt
Hey folks,
We are Cam and Rob, known by some as CameRob, and we are running to be your social reps for next year.  Clerkship is likely to be a very busy time for us, so we see the social rep position as being particularly important to keep the class together.  Basically, we like to go out and have fun–we’ll probably be at all of the social events next year, so we figure we may as well help organize them.  Our first order of business:  bring back the condo crawl.  We also hope to hold events after each rotation, and we’ll make every effort to cater to the entire class.
Hopefully we can get your vote on Monday!

b) Jacqui Holiff
Hi Fitzies!! I am running for Fitz Rep again because I have some great ideas for clerkship! First, I would like to establish either a dinner or bar night once a month open to whoever can make it. This way, we can keep in touch and try to stay sane together :) Second, like the talent show we had in first year, I would like to set up an open-mic or coffee house night (essentially like a talent show but less formal scheduling of acts). I will also work to keep organizing other socials and meals for Fitzies, as well as bringing other academies into the mix. In addition, I am very approachable and am dedicated to getting your issues heard by the admin. I have had a great time being Fitz rep for the last two years and would love the opportunity to continue for at least another year! Please vote for me and I will do my best to make your Fitz clerkship experience the best it can be :)

Have a great weekend!
.
c) Melissa Loh

d) Melanie Ostreicher
Hey Everyone,
I would like you all to come out on Monday and vote for me for Fitz Rep! Why you ask?! Because I have had an unbelievable first two years at this academy and I want make sure that you experience the same too. I’m friendly, outgoing and approachable, and you can always come to me to discuss any issues that may arise. I am also dedicated and hard working, as demonstrated by my endeavors this year in both Daffy and The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Please vote for me as I would love to represent all of you fine individuals at U of T’s best academy. Thanks for your time!!

e) Meg Wolfe-Wylie

2) Peters-Boyd Reps
a) Ines Menjak
Coming from Fitz, I’ve always admired the spirit and closeness of PB students. I’m excited to bring my experiences and ideas to PB to continue making it a great academy. I’m a receptive person that you can bring your concerns and ideas to, and I’ll work hard on your behalf no matter how big or small the issue may be. I look forward to working with the other PB reps and students to make this upcoming year our best one yet.  To sum it up – I’m really hardworking, easy to talk to, and genuinely want to take this position to ensure that we have the best possible experience in clerkship.  Please vote for me for PB Rep, you won’t be disappointed!  Thanks!
.
b) Kate Quirt
Hello! My name is Kate and I am running for PB rep. I am a newbie to the PB academy and I am excited to make it an awesome experience.  I hear great things about the magic of PB and I hope to keep that tradition going. I have experience as Fitz rep with socials and talking with course directors; however, more importantly I feel that I am approachable and receptive to suggestions and concerns. If I became PB rep, I would focus on a variety of different socials because I think next year it may be harder to stay connected…AND furthermore, we will all have wicked hospital stories that will need to be shared!!
.
c) Courtney Scott
Hey 1T1s,
I (Courtney) am running for one of the positions as Peters-Boyd Representative for the 2009-2010 year. I just want to tell you a little bit about why I would be a good candidate for this position. Firstly, I am approachable and open to everyone’s concerns and comments. I am committed to relaying these concerns and comments to the faculty in order to continuously improve the PB experience (which all pre-clerkship PB people know is already great). Secondly, I want our first year of clerkship to be fun. In order to help this happen, I will organize social events so that we don’t lose touch despite our hectic schedules. Lastly, I have experience collaborating with faculty in order to meet the goals of both the students and the faculty. In particular, I held the position of PB Rep in first year, and would welcome the opportunity to do so again now that we will be spending such a significant amount of our time in the hospitals. So come out and vote on Monday, and please vote for me as your Peters-Boyd Representative.
.
d) Emily Siu
Hi 1T1s!!
Are YOU ready for Clerkship at PB!?!?!
It’s not gonna be as easy as a PB&J sandwich….
But I will do my best as PB Rep to make it the BEST for YOU!!!!
Chatting or sleeping on the Magic Shuttle Bus… Clerkship at PB will be a TasTy Time if you VOTE for Em – Me!!!!
.
e) David Sussman
This has been a great year for PB.
From our trip to Northern Ontario, dodgeball tournament,  feeding diabetic homeless, to re-establishing the native dodo bird back to its rightful Sunnybrook location  we’ve really done it all.
There hasn’t been a moment to rest.
It really has been  fun to be the PB rep over the past two years, and hopefully next year as well. I’m not one to make empty promises, but if you vote for me all your wildest dreams will come true.
.
f) Peter Szasz
Hey all,
This is a plug to vote Pete as your Peters-Boyd Clerkship Representative.  Some of the qualities I feel will allow me to represent you best include; strong leadership, approachability, hard work and a great relationship with Ester (MedEd coordinator) although not as good as Sussman has……………
Over the past two-years I have worked to enhance and complement the student experience as Vice-Presided Community Affairs and as Director of the soon to be opened IMAGINE medical clinic.  I would like to continue this platform, now enhancing your clerkship experience whether that be at Sunnybrook, Women’s College, North York General or in the community.  I will work hard to maintain the current role of the clerkship representative position, but I also hope to create a new platform for career exploration, elective information and maintaining a connection with my fellow WB and Fitz representatives for shared events.
Please come out and vote on Monday and don’t forget to Vote Pete for PB rep.

Hi 1T1s,
I just wanted to let you know that I am running for WB rep in the upcoming election and I would be honoured to receive your vote. As a WB rep, I would like to focus on communicating the concerns and needs of the students to the faculty. I also plan on organizing social events to help reduce some of the stress in clerkship. My ideas include going to sporting events, movie nights, summer BBQs and bar nights.
I am very approachable, so please feel free to share with me and ideas and concerns you may have regarding your WB clerkship experience.
.
e) Jayant Ramakrishna
Yo what up 1T1’s…I thought I’d FREESTYLE it on this one for you…WB WHAT!?
Yo…yo…mic check, one, two…
The name’s Jay Rama, and I’m here to say,
That when it comes to elections, I’m here to stay
On Med Soc and as Social Rep, I served u well
So when I run for WB REP, u know I’m serious as hell
They know at WB, we know how to roll hard
And as your WB REP, I’m gonna raise the bar
The Fitzies run to St. Mike’s, ‘cause they’re too scared to be us
And what about PB? They’re so far they can’t see us!
Other academies want beef? Well, Rama’s reppin’ for you
Plus, I’ll throw some SICK parties in semester two
I might diss the other crews, and it’s all in good fun
But as your WB REP, the job will always get done
You know my style is ill, like Tetralogy of Fa-lot
So make sure to vote RAMA, when you hand in that ballot
Wha, wha, wha, WHAT!?
Vote JAY RAMA for WB REP
.
f) Julia Sharp
It was a pleasure working on your behalf as one of your PBD reps this year. I enjoyed the opportunity to get your feedback and use it to improve the course for our class and future classes. At the end of PBD, I was happy to hear from classmates that Amy and I were approachable and kept you all well informed.
If you elect me as one of your WB reps for next year, I will work hard once again to ensure that all of your concerns are addressed and that we have the best experience possible in our cc3 year at WB. Vote Julia Sharp for one of your WB reps!
.
g) Vincent Spano
Hey 1T1′s… I’m Vincent and I am running for a WB representative position for next year. I’m confident I will be able to make sure you have the best WB experience possible. I’m willing to work as hard as I can to not only improve upon previous ideas, but also to introduce a multitude of new events. As a very dedicated and social individual, I will be able to discuss your ideas or concerns and effectively represent all of you as a whole. I have a great rapport with the other candidates, and know that I will work well with any of them to accomplish our goals throughout the year. So when it comes to voting on Monday afternoon, please vote for me as your WB representative! Thanks.

ACE Rep:
.
a) Trevor Arnason
.
b) Karla Maag
I’m running for the position of ACE (ambulatory community experience) representative in the upcoming class election.  I would really like the opportunity to act on your behalf for the next two years and help make your ACE experience run as smoothly as possible.  I’m particularly interested in community-based medicine as well as preventative approaches to primary care and therefore I think I would bring great enthusiasm to this position. I will voice your concerns and feedback to the course directors promptly and act on your behalf to answer any questions you may have.  Thanks for your consideration!    ~Karla
.
c) Melanie Ostreicher
Hey Everyone,
Please vote for me for ACE (Ambulatory Community Experience) rep! Over the last two years I have shadowed a number of emergency shifts and have developed a keen interest in this specialty. I know there are many of you who are developing an interest in emergency too and I want to make sure that your experiences in both your core emergency rotations and electives are the best they can be!! I will work hard to address any requests or needs that may arise and I want you to know that you can approach me for any reasons whatsoever. I’m friendly, social and outgoing and would love to represent you all over the next 2 years!!
Thanks for your time!!
.
Anesthesia Rep:
.
a) Ainsley Sutherland
I don’t have a lot of experience with being a class rep, but I’m really interested in Anaesthesia and committed to creating as many opportunities to learn about Anaesthesia in clerkship as possible.  I think Anaesthesia is a great specialty b/c there’s so many different career paths you can take within it, from palliative care and pain control to critical care.  I can be a strong advocate for our class within the department of anaesthesia and help create more learning opportunities in a specialty that a lot of us don’t know much about.  Thanks for your vote!
.
b) Bertha Wong
Hi 1T1s!
My name is Bertha and I would like to be your course rep for Anaesthesia (“Saving lives one Sudoku puzzle at a time”)!  All kidding aside, I really do think Anaesthesia is an exciting field with a lot of breadth and diverse opportunities. I am currently one of the coordinators for the Anaesthesia Interest Group and have been dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation of this field. Every year, we hold residency info dinners as well as a pub social with the Anaesthesia residents so that you can get the inside scoop on the specialty. Also, in response to feedback we received, this year, we organized two brand new events with a more hands-on flavour: an airway workshop in the stimulation lab and a clinical orientation to the O.R. workshop. As your course rep, I would be proud to voice your concerns on your behalf. I am always open to new ideas  and I would love to hear your thoughts on how to make your Anaesthesia rotation a better (and of course, pain-free) experience!  So please come out on the 27th and vote Bertha for Anaesthesia rep!
.
Dermatology Rep:
.
a) Farheen Mussani
Hi Everyone! I am very excited to be running for the position of Dermatology Representative. I worked with one of the course directors for Dermatology last summer and already have a good rapport with her ? so I will be able to represent you well! I look forward to keeping everyone well informed about dermatology opportunities both during the rotation and in general.  I will also make it my responsibility to ensure everyone looks fresh, well rested and rash-free during the rotation! :) I am dedicated and easy to talk to so I hope you come out and vote for me as your Dermatology Representative on Monday!
.
DOCH Reps:
.
a) Dan Rosenfield
Hey everyone. We have really enjoyed serving as your DOCH reps for the past two years, and would like to continue in this capacity into our clerkship. In the past two years, we have attempted to integrate your feedback into the course, by holding focus groups, running surveys and having discussions with upper year students.  In fact, one major change implemented this year was the switch to team-based learning, a switch we are currently evaluating.  Please support us again for DOCH reps, and we will continue to work to improve the course that we all know and love!

Electives Rep:
.
a) Amy Chen
I want to ensure every one of us obtains the best exposure to our diverse interests in medicine during elective time. As your electives representative, I will do my utmost to act as a dedicated, responsible, and reliable liaison between you and the elective admin team, making sure your concerns are heard and expectations met.
I have had numerous experience as a student representative both as a medical student and an undergraduate student at UofT. Notably, as the course representative for Pathobiology of Disease, I delivered important course information to the class, responded to class inquiries, and actively participated in numerous feedback sessions with the director. As a panellist on the Curriculum Review Committee, I discussed key educational issues with fellow students, and worked with both students and faculty in developing comprehensive recommendations.
Finally, I work well with fellow students as well as faculty staff. I am organized, approachable, committed and have a genuine interest in the quality of our education. So vote for me, Amy Chen as your electives rep, and I will do my best to ensure you get the most out of your elective experience (i.e. the perfect mix of fun and education)!
.
b) Lorraine Jensen
Hey class,
I’m running for Electives Representative on next year’s class council. I’ll keep this short & sweet: I have experience as an academy representative at WB, I was on the IgFM exec and I’m currently working on setting up a Community Affairs program with Visions of Science (a community organization).  I also did a ROMP placement last June so I have some experience with the organization and how to find preceptors. I think elective organization is something we are all thinking about and something that is extremely important for career exploration. I hope to facilitate this process and make the transition to clerkship as easy as possible for us. I think my main role would be to keep the channels of communication open and listen to any and all concerns. I look forward to working with you!
.
c) Tea Mutabdzic
Hey everyone,
Still confused about electives? How to set them up, choose where to go, how many to do in cardiac surgery? Well, I promise to find out every last detail about the process and to make it as easy as possible for you to get it all set up. I will support you and even listen to you rant about how unfair UBC is! Vote Tea Mutabdzic for electives rep!
.
ENT Rep:
.
a) Alaina Garbens
Hello everyone!
It’s me Alaina and I’m running to be your ENT representative. As ENT rep my goal and duty is to make sure your ENT rotations run smoothly and you find a place in your heart for ENT! As most of you know, I’m very approachable and want to hear from you your suggestions and ideas. Course directors want and appreciate feedback about how students are enjoying their courses, so you need a representative who will listen to you and relay your thoughts and ideas to faculty in a professional manner. As a WB academy rep this year, myself and others have expressed your thoughts about improvements to courses for next year *cough* DOCH2 *cough*, and the faculty is making those changes! Furthermore, you also need someone who you can turn too if things aren’t going well (we all know that despite our best efforts that this happens!) and as your ENT rep I will be there. I think ENT is awesome, and so on Monday April 27th, please vote ALAINA for ENT rep… You won’t regret it!!
.
b) Dupe Oyewumi
Hey Guys!  I’m running for the ENT rep position and would love for your vote!  For the past two years I have been the pre-clerkship co-rep.  In that role, I have sat on the pre-clerkship committee and have had the oppourtunity to listen and share your concerns about the pre-clerkship curriculum with the course directors.
I would love to continue to represent our 1T1 class during our clerkship years as the ENT rep. Otolaryngology is a speciality that that I find extremely exciting and have thoroughly enjoyed my pre-clerkship ENT experiences and observerships!  By the end of clerkship I hope to ensure that you all also feel the same way about ENT! And even though our core rotation time in ENT is only one week long, I want to make sure that it is the BEST Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) week possible!
I am easy to talk to and am always open to hearing your ideas and any issues that you are having!
So vote for me, DUPE OYEWUMI, as your clerkship ENT representative!!
.
c) Rebecca Zener
Rebecca NOSE best. Vote ZENER for ENT rep.
Can you imagine learning all of ENT in a mere 4 or 5 days without feeling like you have Vertigo? Let me stabilize your Semicircular Canals and Vestibular System! Since ENT is one of my earliest rotations, I will have the personal experience and knowledge to help the many of you who have ENT later in the year! Do you wish you were a child so you could play with triangle blocks instead of having to know the anatomical triangles of the neck? Is your knowledge about the ear limited to that you have two? Have no fear! I would like to work to develop an ENT study-guide to help you through your week, or organize a review session prior to when you start your rotation. I am passionate about otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ENT). My favourite nerve is my recurrent laryngeal, which I promise is in great shape and I will exercise it to REPRESENT your CONCERNS and ADVOCATE for YOUR NEEDS. I have a lot of previous experience in organizing groups, acting as a student leader and representative in education related-issues. Some relevant involvement includes being the Director for the Faculty of Medicine on University of Toronto Students’ Union last year, the current S3D co-president, and my undergraduate involvement at Western as a Faculty of Science representative on both the University and Science Students’ Council, and an undergraduate and professional student Senator on the University Senate and its academic policy and awards committee. Please come out and vote and give me the great honour of being your ENT course representative because REBECCA NOSE BEST!

Family Medicine Rep:
.
a) Hayley Eisenberg
Hi everyone!  I am so excited to be running for family medicine rep!  I look forward to ensuring all our family medicine opportunities and experiences are as rich as possible.  I am approachable, easy going, and a good listener.  And most importantly, I make sure things get done.  I hope I get the opportunity to serve as your representative for clerkship.  Thank you for your consideration!
.
b) Keely Johnston
Hi everyone,
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Keely Johnston and I would like to run for your clerkship family medicine rep.  I am passionate about family medicine as a career choice and am dedicated to helping students to have the best possible experience/exposure to family medicine at UofT.  As you may know, I am currently one of the co-presidents of the Family Medicine Interest Group (IgFM) and was a first year family medicine rep on the IgFM exec last year.  I have established a good rapport with staff at the Department of Community and Family Medicine and would love the opportunity to continue this relationship by representing our class – the soon to be clerks!- over the next two years.
.
c) Carly Morin
My name is Carly, and I’m running for Family Medicine Representative! I’m passionate about the many great things that Family Medicine has to offer: ongoing relationships with patients, addressing the psychosocial aspects that come along with every health issue, and problem solving my way through diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. I have organizational experiences, including my work on the Preclerkship HIV Elective planning committee. I am enthusiastic, and I have an open-ear for suggestions – so I am ready to take action in representing our class to make the Family Medicine experience in Clerkship as exciting as possible!
*Vote CARLY MORIN for Family Medicine Rep*
.
d) Kristin Wadsworth
Hello everyone! My name is Kristin Wadsworth and I want you to vote for me to be your Family Medicine Clerkship Rep!
Why should you vote for me? I love family medicine, and I love being a representative! For the past 2 years I have been an active member of the Interest Group in Family Medicine and been involved in many events and activities promoting family medicine at U of T. I have also been your FMP Rep and shared your comments and concerns with all of the course organizers.
Since about half of us will be family physicians, I think it is very important to ensure that we are learning the skills and having the practice needed to be great at this important area of medicine! I am very approachable and reliable and am willing to do anything to get your thoughts heard by the faculty.
On Monday April 27 vote for me, Kristin Wadsworth, to be your Family Medicine Clerkship Rep! Thanks!!
.
Internal Medicine Rep:
.
a) Oxana Kolenchenko
I would like to be your medicine rep next year to help us get through medicine in one piece and hopefully learn lots along the way. If you’ve come to Daffy I’m sure you enjoyed the costumes that Romy and I put together, like Speedbump’s burlap sack. But what does Daffy costume directing have to do with medicine you ask’ Well, I’ll do my best to work with your concerns and suggestions when it comes to medicine, so that the finished product is something that we can all be happy with (and hopefully infinitely less itchy than burlap). Oh, and apparently medicine is often about quizzing us on all we know, so factor 4 in the coagulation cascade = calcium, so there you go, that’s something. Vote for me, Oxana Kolenchenko :)’
.
b) Dan Segal
Hey 1T1s, I’m running for the internal medicine rep. position.  For the past two years I have been an academy representative, acting as a liason between students and the academy staff.  I’ve really enjoyed helping students get their concerns heard, and throwing the occasional shindig.  Next year I’d like to represent the whole class, by being your representative for a somewhat daunting rotation.  I will be proactive sending out information to rotations before they start internal medicine to address common concerns including the evaluations.  I will be there to deliver your feedback to the program directors and advocate for you.  In essence, I’ll work on your behalf to make internal medicine go as smoothly as possible.
.
Obstetrics and Gynecology Rep:
.
a) Erika Frasca
Hey everyone,
Feeling lost about next year? Worried about the late nights and early mornings? Interested in pursuing an elective in Obs/Gyn and don’t even know where to start? Tired of reading so many Obs/Gyn blurbs? Think that this blurb has too many questions? I do too, and I’d like to help ease your concerns and answer any Obs/Gyn questions you might have next year.
I’m running for Obs/Gyn Rep because I think it’s an amazing specialty and I’d love to help make it a great experience for you.
VOTE ERIKA FOR OBS/GYN REP!!!!! (thanks)
.
b) Ariel Mendlowitz
Several fantastic candidates – one life altering decision.  Who will be the next Obstetrics and Gynaecology course rep?  In all seriousness, all of us are dedicated, bright individuals who have a strong interest in OBS/GYN.  So why vote for me, Ariel?  Well, I want OBS/GYN to be a wonderful positive experience not only for OBS/GYN keeners like myself, but for the rest of the class whose feelings may range from “its kinda cool” to “loathsome”.  As rep, my goal would be to advocate for the needs and concerns of the class to give everyone the best OBS/GYN experience possible.  As I think most of you guys know, I’m a fun, friendly and approachable, and I hope no one would have any hesitation to bring me their concerns.  Even if you’re doing your OBS/GYN block this time next year when it will be nice and sunny and I’ll be stuck inside doing Medicine and Surgery, I promise to address your concerns with the same level of understanding and affability, as when I?m in my own OBS/GYN block.   I’m confident that I would make an excellent liaison between our class, department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the rest of the faculty.  I hope you heartily agree and vote for me, Ariel, for OBS/GYN rep!
.
c) Rebecca Menzies
Hi 1T1,
As you all know, the class council elections are coming up and I would like to express my passion and excitement with you all for running as Obs/Gyn rep.
I believe I would be a good candidate due to my prior experience in the field. Presently, I hold a Master’s degree in Ovarian Cancer Genomics from Dr. Tak Mak’s lab as well as being involved in Dr. Sandra Kim’s Gestational diabetes research as part of my DOCH-II project.
As your Obs/Gyn rep I would: facilitate communication between students and professors, gather study tips from Residents, coordinate Obs/Gyn clerkship events and be a great listener and liaison to represent the 1T1 class!
I would like to thank everyone in advance and hope to offer the best Obs/Gyn clerkship experience possible!
.
d) Sharon Sadry
Hey 1T1′s, I’m extremely passionate about women’s sexual health and will use this energy to make our Obs/Gyn experience as fun and meaningful as possible! Whether you’re interested in Obs/Gyn or fear the thought of doing your first Pap, you can count on me to listen to your concerns and voice your suggestions. I’m reliable and accessible, and will act as a liaison between you and the various site coordinators at the monthly Obs/Gyn education committee meetings. I will keep the class informed not only on issues related to the rotation, but more generally on reproductive/sexual health opportunities outside of the curriculum. I have relevant experience for the position through being on the Student Affairs Liaison Team, as well as being a program director for both Healthy Sexuality and Diversity in Medicine. I am also continuing to systematically evaluate the reproductive health components of our curriculum with Medical Students for Choice. With my enthusiasm in this area, it would be my honour and pleasure to work for our class in this position!
.
e) Julie Thorne
I am running to be your representative for the Obstetrics and Gynecology (Obs/Gyn) clerkship course because I am seriously interested in Obs/Gyn and seriously interested in you all getting as much as possible out of this rotation. Seriously.
I will be your voice to share any concerns, feedback, and questions you have to the coordinators of the Obs/Gyn course and I will promptly disseminate to you any information they provide. I will send out details on upcoming conferences and seminars related to female health and reproductive health for those of you with an active interest in Obs/Gyn. I am very interested in collaborating with the Electives representative to help connect you with obstetricians and gynecologists for your electives blocks both in Toronto and in other communities.
On April 27, vote Julie Thorne to be YOUR Obs/Gyn representative!
“When people ask me why I am running as a woman, I always answer, “What choice do I have?”” Pat Schroder
“The especial genius of women I believe to be electrical in movement, intuitive in function, spiritual in tendency.” Margaret Fuller

Ophthalmology Rep:
a) Hannah Chiu
Why do I want to be ITI’s Ophtho rep?
Many of you may be confused as to what ophthalmology really is about.  For something like “vision” that has such a large impact on a patient, we only get to learn about it in the following manner:
- one week back in first year during B&B to learn all about the eye.
- we will only have two weeks of half days to get through all the material we need to know in the future as a clinician… because
regardless of which field you may choose in the end, the EYE is often involved as a sequela of diseases across the spectrum.
For something so important but with so little time, I want to make sure YOU have the best experience.
So come out to vote on Monday, April 27: Choose Eye, Chiu’s I.

Imagine: As you look sheepishly at the ophthalmology resident, he/she smiles at you, pats you on the head, and says, “Don’t worry, I’ll help you. Here.” The resident’s hand comes to rest on your ophthalmoscope, guiding it steadily in front of the patient’s eye. The once trembling light becomes steady and – behold – a glorious red reflex is seen! What was once a dizzying storm of light and cloud sharpens and takes form. Pulsating veins can be seen winding along the pinkish retina. An optic nerve shining like the midday sun beams back at you. You are elated. “I understand! Eureka!” While I cannot promise you such satisfying moments during your clerkship rotation in ophthalmology, I will work diligently to ensure that our short time with the eyeball is well organized and well taught, with the appropriate amount of hand-holding and spoon-feeding. By interacting with the Powers at Be and revisiting long-forgotten memories of clerkship inadequacy, I will do my very best to bring compassion and patience into our teaching.  My goal will be to ensure that every single member of our class is satisfied with their ophthalmology education. This means understanding your hopes and concerns, advocating on your behalf, seeking evaluation and critique from you about the course, and ensuring that changes are implemented. I urge you to consider me for the role of Ophthalmology representative, together we can put the FUN back in Fundoscopy!

Hey Everyone,
I am really excited at the prospect of representing you as your Ophthalmology Rep. I realize that ophtho is a short unit and for most of you will be a week that you just have to get through in order to finish 3rd year. In order to make the rotation as informative, entertaining, and enlightening as possible, I want to know what your goals are for the unit and I will work diligently to make sure those goals are realized. I will be friendly, accessible, and open to ideas and will share your concerns and suggestions with the faculty in a timely manner. For those of you that are interested in Ophthalmology as a potential career, I would provide elective information and contacts so you can explore the field and discover all it has to offer.
In short, I would love to represent you as the 1T1 Ophthalmology Representative. Please consider me for your vote on Monday!

Pediatrics Rep:

a) Jennifer Galle
There are THREE MAIN REASONS why I will be the right person to represent you as the Paediatrics Representative on next year’s Student Council!
First, my PAST EXPERIENCE. Over the last two years, I have had the opportunity to represent you in two different areas of personal interest. My experiences as Problem Based Learning Representative on Pre-clerkship Student Council and my involvement as Vice-President Interprofessional Education on the Medical Society are two invaluable experiences that have given me the skills and knowledge necessary to represent our class best. As many of you who have discussed PBL or IPE with me know, I take on my passions wholeheartedly and make it a priority. Paediatrics is another strong interest of mine, and I would love to be given this opportunity to once again represent our class in an area that is important to me – this time as your Pediatrics Rep!
Secondly, my PERSONALITY. As I hope many of you have come to learn, I am a personable and approachable individual who strives to know you all personally. I am also an individual who loves to be involved in both academic and extra-curricular activities, so that I can help make your experiences at UofT enjoyable and enriching. As Paediatrics Rep, I am certain that my personality and eagerness to be involved in class activities will resonate well with my eagerness to make your paediatric experience memorable and positively influential for you!
Lastly, my COMMITEMENT. As Paediatrics Representative, I have the dedication, motivation, and skills necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. These responsibilities include attending monthly undergraduate meetings, actively participating in revision of our course syllabus, and serving as a liaison between faculty and students. Within each responsibility, I will try my hardest to ensure that you are aware of the issues pertaining to paediatrics and have the opportunity to voice any concerns or feedback that you may have. Thanks!!!

Lara Hart – Master of the Moro, Translator of the Baby Talk, Pacifier of the Cranky…
But to be serious – and I’ll keep this nice and short  - I’m really interested in the field of paediatrics and I love working with kids. I won’t bore you with my experience in student government or my interactions with children (but trust me, it’s extensive). I think I would be great for this position because of my keen interest in and enthusiasm for the specialty. I am approachable and happy to help connect students with staff and relay concerns and questions. I’ll keep you updated about the paeds curriculum and help you have a great experience during your rotation.
After surveying thousands of toddlers, the results are conclusive – they think I would do a great job, and so should you.
Vote Lara for Paeds rep!

Hi 1T1s!! Please elect me (Jacqui Holiff) for your Clerkship Psych Course Rep! I have thought of the following reasons that you can use to justify checking my box off on the election sheet:
1. I am very approachable. If given the opportunity, I look forward to hearing your comments about the course, which I will relay to the appropriate administrators. I will do by absolute best to get your voices heard!
2. I want to connect with the Psych Interest Group (PIG) to form some fun events. If funding allows, a dinner at the end of your psych rotation would be a nice way to say an “until next time” to the course!
3. The last couple of years, I have discovered a great interest in Psych and would really appreciate the chance to get more involved in the subject and make your clerkship Psych experience the best it can be. Because of this interest (and my semi-neurotic organizational skills… they say Psych attracts the weird ones :P), I promise to be dedicated to and very responsive if elected to the position of Psych Rep.
**I would greatly appreciate your vote! Thanks and have a great weekend :)**

Dear Class,
I am running for Surgery rep. Here’s why:
We are a very diverse group of individuals with different expectations for the surgery rotation. Approximately 1/3rd of our class will pursue surgery, while 2/3rds will pursue non-surgical career paths.  Regardless of your present plans for your future medical career, we all have this exciting opportunity to experience surgery first-hand for 6 weeks.  I would like to represent the class so that I can work to make your surgery rotation the best experience possible for you.
If elected, my job will be to administer pre- and post-rotation surveys to gather your opinions, criticisms and present these to the faculty during meetings.  Importantly, I will be available to hear your concerns and difficulties as you go through the 6week period so that we can address the issues as they occur.  Lastly, I will gather ressources, information and tips from our upper year colleagues to help you with the daunting surgery exam.
Whether you plan to be a surgeon or not, this rotation is meant to be an incredible learning experience, stimulating interest not anxiety.  I will represent our class with this concept in mind.

c) Nathalie Wong-Chong
Hey 1T1s,
Let me be your voice for our surgery rotations!
As one of last year’s PB reps (for NYGH), I listened to your concerns and shared them with the faculty. By doing so, we were able to access the residents’ on-call room for storage space, get better teaching supplies for the ASCM classrooms, and get lockers installed for students! I voiced your concerns about switching hospitals for 2nd year and worked with the PB office to match you to your hospital of choice for ASCM 2!
Now I’d like to represent the entire class and listen to your concerns to make our surgical rotations the best they can be! Whether you?ve already ruled it out, or you?re dying to be the next world famous surgeon, I want you to find surgery as fascinating, exhilarating and fun as I think it is!!
My ideas for next year include:
-          Making an online forum (either on facebook or linked to our class website) that will allow us to share study tips, survival strategies, mnemonics, or random facts about our surgical rotations and  electives
-          Set up a contact list where students can offer suggestions for good tutors to do surgical electives with
-          Book out rooms in advance for group study sessions (before exams) for each surgical rotation (across academies) and to lobby class council for funding for night-time study snacks and coffee
-          Collaborate with S3D, Women in Surgery, Academy surgery reps, and staff members to address any concerns you may have and to organize events and guest speakers that YOU would be interested in
-          Send out a survey to 1T0s to get tips and advice on CaRMS applications for surgical specialities
-          Work with you and your ideas and suggestions!!!
If you want to see change……and right the wrong, then vote for WONG!
Vote Nathalie Wong-Chong for Surgery Rep!
