Mississauga Academy Rep:

KATIE ARMSTRONG:

Hi Everyone.  My name is Katie Armstrong and I am running for Mississauga Academy Representative.  I am from Mississauga and part of the pilot CVH ASCM II Group.  I have previously participated in discussions with Dr. Coates, the academy director, about the med school expansion and have helped recruit 1T2s to Trillium.  I have had a wonderful experience in Mississauga and would like to contribute to the further development of the Mississauga Academy as the Academy Representative.  Thanks.

PB Academy Rep:

MICHELLE LAM (Sunnybrook):

As a Peters-Boyd representative for Women’s College last year, I had the opportunity to get an inside look into the workings of PB. Lots of issues came up and while many of them are in the process of being resolved, some of them have yet to be tackled. For instance, PB wants to have a greater emphasis on Interprofessional Learning, and our extended days at Sunnybrook would be the perfect time for us to not only attend IPL sessions, but would also be a great time for us to interact as an academy. I feel as though the camaraderie in our academy is strong, but it can be even greater with even more chances to get to know one another. I can help to bring these changes on board. Furthermore, I have the unique privilege of knowing both Women’s College and Sunnybrook well, and so can contribute an added perspective to the hospital council meetings. I believe I’m fairly approachable, and I would be entirely open to any feedback or suggestions from anyone in PB. So, please vote for Michelle Lam for PB rep! Thanks!

GILLIAN LINDZON (Sunnybrook):

Hi class, I am hoping to be the PB for Sunnybrook again for this upcoming year and I would really appreciate your support. I really enjoyed representing SBK last year and had a great time organizing breakfasts, lunches and of course, Spring Fling. I am committed to hearing your ideas and feedback and presenting them to Dr. Nickell at our academy meetings. I think last year’s academy success is a refection of all the representatives’s hardwork and dedication, and I would love to hold this position again to ensure another great year at PB.  Thanks very much in advance for all your support!

REEMA SHAH (Sunnybrook):

Hi, my name is Reema Shah and I am running for Peters-Boyd Representative. I have had extensive experience representing student interests to community and university organizations in the past, and I hope to build on that experience by representing your views to the various hospital committees and the General Assembly. Moreover, I have some interesting/creative ideas that I would like to propose for next year. Firstly, as we all know our different hospitals are so far away from each other, it is difficult to coordinate social activities, but as PB rep I would like to organize events for all PB students to attend and get to know each other better. To create better professional relationships between the students and hospital administration ? including all tutors, I would like to organize a wine and cheese or similar event at the beginning of the year so that student interaction is not limited to their own tutors. As PB rep I would like to lobby for a transportation allowance for those travelling to North York General Hospital. I know I do not have prior experience serving as an academy rep, but I feel this would allow me to approach the position with fresh eyes. So please come out and vote on Friday and vote Reema Shah for PB rep for Sunnybrook Hospital. Thank you.

DAVID SUSSMAN (Sunnybrook):

I like to think of myself as Elizabeth May except I am not a female and am not a leader of a political party…yet. As opposed to my opponents running, I am walking at a brisk pace but not yet sweating for PB rep. In all seriousness, I think that it is important that the voices of the students at PB be heard, and this is something that I will do. That being said, why should the job stop there. I believe that things could be changed and learning should be fun. That is why if elected I will propose mandatory days for which PB students must smile. I have talked to the other academy reps and we think it would be fun to incorporate a little healthy competition between academies such as a decathalon, or a very large dodgeball tournament. I really do believe that while its important for your voices to be heard, its also important to have fun while doing so. And to all those who do not want to vote for me, I have a simple phrase: “What’s the worst
that can happen?”

Kind words from the Dean

Dean Whiteside sent us the following letter over the summer that we’d like to share with the class:

“I am writing to acknowledge the noble work that Meds 1T1 has undertaken by pledging to raise funds in support of Bloorview Kids Foundation.  I understand that to date you have raised $1,046 – an impressive amount and one which I’m certain is being put to good use at the hospital.

The spirit of community service you are demonstrating is one of the most important reasons that you are in medical school.  You have chosen to pursue a profession which is focused on helping others and you are living testaments to that commitment.

I applaud your tremendous efforts directed toward the foundation and thank you for being such great ambassadors for our medical school.

With sincere regards,

Dean Catharine Whiteside, MD, PhD, FRCPC”

A bit of warm and fuzzy to get you all pumped for a great 2nd year!
